This adopted, little girl born in Korea grew up in a small, all white community where she stuck out like a red wine stain on a beautiful wedding gown. With the early divorce of her adoptive parents, this striving to belong, this striving to be who she thought others would accept her, this striving to be perfect, this struggle for identity, she would pack them one by one as her “baggage” into adulthood.
It‘s a privilege to be a part of Death by Great Wall’s series “On Being Adopted.” You can read the rest of my thoughts on “Marriage And The Past Through An Adoptee’s Eyes” here…
Hi Tara, Thank you for your story…I was born in Korea and our family came to US when I was 9 years old. I too grew up in a small town where we stuck out like a sore thumb. My story is different from yours but the brokenness of living in such a fallen world as a fallen person is the same. My life changed when I met Jesus Christ for the first time 7 years ago. He is the love of my life and BOY did he ever rock my world! In short 7 years God has restored and healed so much. I have a godly husband of 3 years and we are in the process of adopting a 4 year old from China. God never cease to amaze me by his care for me. Because I am adopting, I started to prepare for my son’s arrival by researching children from hard places. In the process, God has healed me so much by giving me understanding of why I behave the way do. Even though I did not grow up in an orphanage, I too grew up with no authority in the house with too much responsibility for a child to handle. My biggest regrets in life is not being a godly mom raising my 2 daughters (from a previous marriage and God is still at work restoring my relationship with them). Now God is giving me an opportunity to be a godly mom. My joy is overflowing! I know there will some rough roads ahead of us but a blessing at the same time.
How I would love to have coffee with you and share….love you.
Thank you for visiting Min! I’m so glad we have connected and I appreciate you sharing where God has brought you. I love coffee and I would love the opportunity to meet you
